Utah SAMPE Chapter

Material and Process engineering is the technology by which materials are developed or selected and manufacturing processes chosen which will convert those materials into products which meet the design, performance, producibility, quality, and cost effective criteria required.

The Society for the Advancement of Material and Process Engineering (SAMPE®), an international professional member society, provides information on new materials and processing technology either via technical forums, journal publications, or books in which professionals in this field can exchange ideas and air their views. As the only technical society encompassing all fields of endeavor in materials and processes, SAMPE provides a unique and valuable forum for scientists, engineers, and academicians.

When SAMPE was first formed in 1944, it was founded by nine aerospace professionals from Southern California and was called “The Society of Aircraft Material and Process Engineers.” In the 1960’s, the space race helped expand SAMPE’s vision beyond just aircraft and in 1973 the organization's name was changed to The Society for the Advancement of Material and Process Engineering, reflecting membership growth beyond the aerospace industry. Today SAMPE encompasses a much broader array of material and process concerns, as wide as the world of materials themselves.

SAMPE’s strength is in its local chapters. SAMPE is People and SAMPE provides excellent opportunities to network with your professional peers locally as well as internationally. We have professional and student member chapters worldwide. Utah has been an especially rich area for the development of advanced materials and processes. Companies like Hercules (now Hexcel and ATK) and Thiokol (also recently acquired by ATK) pioneered the use of high-strength composite structures for aerospace and defense.

Advanced materials have been the key enabling technologies in every age of human development. Whole ages in history, ages like the stone age, the bronze age and the iron age, have been defined by their dominant materials.

If you are not a member, come and join SAMPE, and help define your age.
