Over his past 25 years in composites and nonmetallics applications and materials development, Mr. Johnson has successfully implemented programs using a wide range of polymer matrix composites (polyester, phenolic, epoxy, bismaleimide, cyanate ester, polyimide, polybenzimidazole with spectra, kevlar, glass, quartz, carbon, and ceramic fibers), metal and ceramic matrix composites, carbon-carbon, plastics, and elastomers. In addition, Mr. Johnson has experience in special processes including bonding, brazing, conformal coating, and plating/conversion coating treatments and extensive experience in project/program management and personnel/department management. He has also published numerous papers in various technical forums.
There are a considerable number of composite material types and processes that have been used for satellite products. Cyanate ester matrices have found a large degree of acceptance and application in recent years. However, there have been some processing issues related to side reactions and carbamate formation. Cyanate Esters are sensitive to moisture during long term storage and cure as well as some other side reactions. However, the outstanding properties of CE’s can be readily and effectively realized with attention to a few details of their chemistry and good manufacturing practices. When problems arise there are excellent, well-proven tools to rapidly characterize problems and provide positive, effective solutions.
